Record Music, Mixer, & Producer
I graduated from high school early as a junior and took a year of classes in computer engineering and did not like it. So the summer of 1983 I started mixing live sound for the K-Ace party band while taking an adult learning class at the College of Lake County in audio engineering. That fall, I went to the Recording Workshop for 6 weeks and completed my training. I went back immediately to Chicago and applied at every studio in the Chicago area. I got only one interview.
It so happens I got the job at Chicago Recording Company. At the time, they had 7 studios and I mostly worked the night shift, the music shift. Rock-n-Roll, R&B, and crazy stuff. I was there about 2 years and decided to go back o school. I went JBU in Arkansas where I got a full ride for being the sound man for the school’s group. I also developed a course for the broadcast department there, Recording 101 and taught it myself as a student professor.
I journeyed to Nashville in 1987 and began hoofin’ sessions there and doing weekends out for live sound. By 1989, I was doing sessions steady and started producing indy records with a buddy. We were quite busy for a few years and then we decided to go our own ways. He was the brains, I wanted to mix. He went on to be incredible successful. I went on to be incredibly busy.
I went thru some tough personally times in 94’ that took my career to an all time low that summer/fall, even though the year before I had my first Grammy record. I feel my real break into mixing was 95’. Back then you had to be tracking records for years before anyone would let you mix and you also had to have mixed before they would let you mix. Hmmm, well I broke in and kept going...
From there my discography and awards speak for themselves. I just wanted to give you the background. Thanks.
I still track records, 3-4 a year. I mix a lot of records, 15-20 a year and master Indie stuff 2-4 a month. My rates aren’t crazy, we hardly turn down anybody for budget, we just find a way to make it work. Contact Us.
